The problems with this disease do not stop at your mouth. Four out of five adults have some form of periodontal disease. People suffering from periodontal disease are twice as likely to suffer from heart disease. Periodontal disease is a red flag- warning of future tooth loss, heart attack, or stroke. It is also related to lung infections and exacerbates diabetes. It is a slow progressing, and painless disease, so most people don't even know they have it.

Women have special needs at different stages of life. Puberty, menstruation, pregnancy and menopause all can influence your oral health and the need for dental and medical care. During these times, your body experiences hormonal changes that can increase your risk for periodontal disease leading to a variety of other health concerns; Pre-term and low birth-weight babies, stroke, and cardiovascular disease.

Getting and helping you keep your mouth healthy is a high priority in our office. We think of our hygienists as periodontal therapists. They are highly trained in non-surgical periodontal therapy. With more advanced disease cases, Dr. Sostowski performs his own surgeries so you don't need to be ‘referred out'.
